Flag signals: the Newsletter of Ely Sailing Club March 2026

Published 17:48 on 3 Apr 2026

Despite February seeming to last well into at least March, it's finally sailing time!

First, we would like to extend a massive thanks to everyone who has pitched in to help with the working parties this year;
we've got an amazing amount done and the clubhouse is looking fantastic. We must mention that the new curtains, which not
only look great, but also make the clubhouse feel much warmer and cosier when it's dark, wet and cold outside, were an
incredibly generous donation, so the only cost to the club was the curtain poles!

Over winter we've also collected a significant amount of sailing clothing through our clearing out. Please take a look at the box
in the clubhouse - if there's anything that suits you (or belongs to you), please do re-home it. Anything still there in May will be
disposed of.

Sailing starts with Social Sailing on Saturday 28th and then the first races of the year on Sunday. Remember that the clocks go
forward at 2am on Sunday morning! The Easter Egg races are on the following Sunday, with Easter Eggs to be won for first and
second places for adults and cadets.

If you are nervous about getting back on the water, we're having a launch day on Saturday 4th April, when there will be getting
rigged and reminders if needed. But if you'd like an experienced helm to take you out in a double handed dinghy to refresh
your confidence, please let us know and we'll arrange a social sailing sessions where this can occur to support your confidence
to get back on the water.

There are still quite a few gaps in the duty roster, particularly for rescue, so if you can spare an extra duty, please do sign up so
sailing can take place. Power boat drivers, please, please remember to volunteer for rescue, rather than other duties: over the
course of the year, there are 100 rescue duties to be done and we now have 28 power boat drivers, so it should be less than 4
each, but if you do other duties, the rescue duties still need to be done!

Hope to see you soon,

Ian, Catherine and Brent
