Flag signals: the Newsletter of Ely Sailing Club January 2026

)>2029983<( Christmas may already be fading in our memories, but thankfully there's lots to look forward to at the club in 2026. Catherine is hard at work on the sailing programme for the year and once that is settled, the duty roster will be made available mid February-ish so that you can volunteer for the dates that suit you best. On the social front, Brent and his wonderful

Flag signals: the Newsletter of Ely Sailing Club December 2025

With the last social evening of the year behind us, that's almost a wrap on 2025, with just the Boxing Day races and the Model Yacht Christmas races on the 27th (and 3rd January) to look forward to. Boxing Day racing starts at 11am and as always, the exact format will depend on the weather and how many of you come along to take part! At the moment, the forecast

Season's Eatings at ESC Christmas Lunch

It's the most wine-derful time of the year & we've had a turke-ley wonderful Christmas dinner today so big sprout-out to all our members who cooked, decorated, came and supplied bundles of Christmas cheer. The club was aglow with fairy lights, tinsel and all manner of Santa themed décor thanks to the elves who were down decorating yesterday (they're definitely on the nice list this year). Kicking off with mulled wine which, after

    Laying Up Supper 2025

What do we need? Fairy lights? When do we need them? Last night. Last night saw the annual Laying Up Supper at Ely Sailing Club and this year was particularly fabulous (not that we always think that!). The lights were strung, the tables laid, the trophies polished, the extra furniture stashed in the showers and then... It was time! It started as all good things do, with bubbles and a warm welcome

    Spooktacular Sailing @ Ely

Boo (AHH)! Or is it boo (aww)? Sadly it's the end of the 2025 sailing season for Ely SC (except for the Boxing Day races!) but we have certainly gone out on a high. It was the Halloween Bowl trophy races today where 12 eager sailors took to the water in a suitably spooky West South-West (except when it wasn't!) wind. The first race saw some terrifying conditions with a fair

    Roswell Monster Trophy 2025

It's well & truly trophy time at the club after a brief hiatus for the August Mini Pursuit Series. Today saw perhaps the most impressive trophy, the Roswell Monster, with 7 boats competing to win the intricate award. Race Officer Pauline set a long course across the lake, trying to prevent any too-nasty gybes in the gusty weather (we did say trying!). A streaker, enterprise, topper, solo and 2 lasers took to the start

    ESC on the Norfolk Broads

"We shall break out the jib and the foresail, the white houses on the harbour side will glide slowly past us as she gathers steering-way, and the voyage will have begun!" - The Wind in the Willows 14 Ely Sailors have been back out on the Norfolk Broads this weekend for the annual club (adult) trip to take out stunning vintage 'Rebel' class 1930s boats from Hunter's Yard in Norfolk. A very

    Ely Youth League :-)

Today, Saturday 5 July was one of our favourite days of the sailing calendar - it was Ely's turn to host a round of the Cambs Youth League. The league is a collaboration between 5 local clubs to promote friendly sailing for cadets up to 19. Breaking from the past few years' precedent, it was a breezy day! Kicking off early, we were hot to go with pastries and coffee a plenty

    2025 Overnight Race a Success

Are we mad? Maybe a little. Did we have fun? By the bucket full. Last night, 21 st -22 nd June, on the summer solstice, was the Ely Sailing Club 12 hour overnight race. Starting at 6pm, teams started arriving and rigging the 3 club Wayfarers for their overnight exploring. The weather looked problematic at first with the happy sailors attempting to set a course in very little wind, deciding eventually on a

Weekend Round Up: Cadets Brave the Broads & Whitsun Cup

It's been a busy weekend for Ely Sailing Club - depsite some typically grey and unpredictable 'summer' weather, we've had an incredible weekend. Starting with Saturday - 4 intrepid cadets took on the broads. Taking Rebel Class 1930s half decker boats from Hunter's Yard in Ludham, we donned our waterproofs, packed lunches and flasks of tea and set sail. Despite some downpours on the journey there, we were rigged and ready in the dry.
