Roswell Monster Trophy 2025

It's well & truly trophy time at the club after a brief hiatus for the August Mini Pursuit Series. Today saw perhaps the most impressive trophy, the Roswell Monster, with 7 boats competing to win the intricate award.

Race Officer Pauline set a long course across the lake, trying to prevent any too-nasty gybes in the gusty weather (we did say trying!). A streaker, enterprise, topper, solo and 2 lasers took to the start for the first of 4 races and, despite some fluky wind, all stayed dry and mostly smiley with Fergus taking the win in his Topper.

It was a quick turnaround for race 2 with a slight course change to avoid confusion in the channel and everyone went back out for more in the gusty winds. It was a close fought race but Jack took the lead with Glenn and Edward taking joint second as there was nothing between them on the handicap.

After a spot of lunch, the wind really was out in force with seriously challenging gusts on top of a flukey inconsistent wind - perfect for some fun for Phil who came down to play. 7 merry sailors went out but, despite incredible efforts, 1 retired in the winds. A few capsizes and rule action later and Edward had taken his 2nd win with Jack close behind meaning all was still to play for in race 4 so yes, they went back out.

A full compliment of 8 boats set about for the last race in the strongest winds of the day and there was plenty of fun to be had with a few more capsizes but still no rescue required (which meant opportunities for photos!) although 1 boat came in due to the ferocious winds. 7 boats admirably made it around the full 4 laps though and mostly with smiles. Another first for Edward who smashed it in the strong winds with his shiny new 4.7 laser sail and the trophy was his!

A few taxi rides back to the lee shore of the berths and a good debrief at the bar discussing the intricacies of centrifugal force (is it a thing? Or not?) and that was the Roswell Monster wrapped up for 2025 with no rescues or tears. Same again next year?

Well done to Edward who won overall and Fergus who will be the 2025 winner of the baby Monster trophy.

See you next week for the double handed races!
