Laying Up Supper 2025
Published 09:06 on 23 Nov 2025
What do we need? Fairy lights? When do we need them? Last night.
Last night saw the annual Laying Up Supper at Ely Sailing Club and this year was particularly fabulous (not that we always think that!).
The lights were strung, the tables laid, the trophies polished, the extra furniture stashed in the showers and then... It was time!
It started as all good things do, with bubbles and a warm welcome for those coming to enjoy the celebrations. Of course, after bubbles, people had to take opportunity to peruse the bar and also we had chance to play with our new card machine.
We also had the opportunity to host SESCA Commodore Andrew and Isle of Ely Rowing Club Chair Martin at the laying up supper and it was fantastic to chat to our water based neighbours and share ideas and tales.
Chef Fabio of Versatile Chef Ltd and his team had been hard at work in the galley cooking up some fresh food and soon everyone took their seat and it was time for some delicious food followed, of course, by pudding, served to our tables under the twinkle of fairy lights... Lots and lots of fairy lights...
Once all was cleared away, it was time for the big event and trophies were to be awarded by Tim, our current Commodore. We started with the committee awarded prizes and the lists of nominations shows just how many 'good eggs' (our commodore's key phrase for the night), keen beans and eager beavers we have around the club.
And once we'd laughed, drumrolled and cheered our way through those, it was time for the racing winners, which this year saw a good spread among members, although Glenn and Edward would have likely benefited from a wheelbarrow to take their hauls home in. And then we had some more certificates to award, kindly prepared by Tam, to those runners ups from this year.
We then carralleled everyone for a family photo - with varying levels of enthusiasm. And most people even looked at the camera.
And of course, it ended how it started... At the bar..
Same again next year?
Thanks as always to the bar manners, fairy lights hangers, certificate makers, chaos coordinators and to every single person who came and joined in the evening. We really do have a fab club.
