Commodore's Newsletter - May 2022
The year is progressing fast! The Spring race series already wrapped up and the second course of the year is being run this weekend.
Ely Open Day and Evening
Thankyou to all those who helped out on the open day and evening. We were blessed with great weather and had a satisfying number of visitors. I've heard nothing but compliments about the club and how friendly and welcoming everyone has been.
We have just come to the end of the Spring racing series and Alan has taken first place with Greg 2nd and Kieran 3rd.
The Easter Egg trophy was won by Greg with Kieran in second place.and Alan third
The Camweld trophy was won by myself. Greg took 2nd place and Glen 3rd.
Jubilee Bank Holiday
A fun sailing afternoon is planned for the Friday bank holiday. Starting from 1:00 there will be a series of games using the club boats. Events like sailing backwards, blindfolded helm, that sort of thing are planned. If you would like to turn up in Royal fancy dress (that you don't mind getting wet) then you will be in good company. I think Steve and Kitty have plans. There will be some sort of prize either for competing or the fancy dress and some Royal event coverage may well be playing on the big screen. The barbeque will be out for you to cook your own food and the bar will be open.
More details will follow nearer the date.
On the following Sunday (5th June) there is the next trophy event. This will be four handicap races (3 to count) starting at 11:00.
Topper Coaching Day and Open Race Day
On 11th and 12th June Ely Sailing Club welcomes Topper sailors from across the Eastern Region.
On Saturday 11th June we have Eastern Region Topper coaches at the club. They will be putting visiting Topper sailors and our own cadets through their paces. As the host club we have a number of free places available for our cadets. It's a really good opportunity to get some great advice on how to race and improve your Topper skills.
On Sunday 12th June Ely Sailing Club hosts our Topper Open. This is a chance to put all that has been learnt to good practice. Again, we'll be joined by Topper sailors from around the region.
Overnight Race On Saturday 18th June we will once again be running our overnight race. It's a fun event which we've all really enjoyed in previous years. Sailing though sunset and as dawn breaks really is spectacular. Full details will be in the notice of race which will be sent out nearer the event. The idea is to finalise teams in the afternoon on the Saturday with the race briefing at 5pm and the race start at 6pm. The barbeque will be available throughout the night and you can bring a tent or sleep in the club house between times in the boat. Please do come and join us. Model Boats Open Event On Sunday 19th June after the overnight racers have finished, the lake will be used for a model boat open event. Details will be published nearer the time. Away Dates For the cadets, there is a youth league event othis coming Saturday (21st May) at Graffham water. There is a topper training event and open at Waldringfield (on the Deben) on 28th and 29th May. There is also a Laser open on the 29th I look forward to seeing you at some of these events, Phil Hardy Commodore, Ely Sailing Club
