Commodore's Newsletter - March 2022

Hello All,

With the daylight lasting longer each day, the start of the sailing season is nearly upon us. It is time to get boats ready for their first outings and check over your kit. There are many things planned for the coming months, but first of all a quick mention of what has been taking place over the winter. Winter Work A big thank you to all those who have helped maintain the buildings and grounds. The working parties have been taking place every Sunday and been really well attended this year. We have been lucky with the weather, but it is thanks to Alan and Tamara's enthusiasm and hard work that we have managed to achieve so much.

  • Vegetation on the islands cleared back

  • The banks in front of the clubhouse cleared and cuttings removed

  • The areas behind the berths cleared and cuttings removed

  • The slipway are cleared of the club trailers (let Alan know if you need to use one of them).

  • Starter's box roof repaired

  • Faulty lights replaced

  • Fences mended

  • Jetty boards replaced

  • Racing marks cleaned

There have also been many Friday evening social gatherings. Thanks to all who attended Kitty's animal quiz - she raised £60 and 2p for helping endangered animals. And the committee have been busy behind the scenes sorting out the plans for the coming season. The calendar including course dates will be published in the next week and the dutyman system will be mailing you to confirm your duties or arrange for swaps. A separate e-mail will go out when the courses are available for booking. Launch Weekend The sailing will start in the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd April with the dinghy launch weekend. This will be social sailing with established club members on hand to help out those who need help or advice with rigging and setting up boats and with sailing in general. On the Sunday the training team will be at the club to get the boats checked out and on the water and give them a chance to practice teaching. Social sailing will carry on alongside this. Calendar This season will see a return to the normal pattern of racing and social sailing with the weekly timings being: Saturday - social sailing in the afternoon from 13:00 to 17:00 Sundays - racing from 13:00. 2 handicap races and one pursuit Tuesdays - Model yachts from 17:00 Thursday - Racing for beginners (pursuits) from 18:00 Friday - Social sailing from 18:30 The trophy races (starting with Easter Sunday) will be 4 races with 3 to count starting at 11:00 Race Officer Duties With a return to handicap racing there is a little more work for those on duty this year. Those who find themselves on duty on a Sunday will need to run the handicap races - which we haven't done for the last two years. For those who haven't done this before and for those who are a bit rusty there will be help on hand. We will be running a familiarisation session next Saturday to show people how it works. The plan is to gather at 13:00 onwards and to use the model boat racing to practice on. Even if you can't make it to this session, the calendar is being created to make sure that people who are new to it are paired with an experienced assistant. We have some printed instructions in the starter's box and they will also be put on the website. Also, the people racing will always be happy to help and advise. Commodore's Reception On Friday 22nd April from 6:30, in addition to the social sailing, there will be a social gathering with some drinks, nibbles and cakes. This is particularly for new members from last year to meet the committee and established members and get to know the club. I look forward to seeing you out on the water or just enjoying the club house and bar. Phil Hardy Commodore
