Commodore's Newsletter - August 2022

Hi All,

It has been a little while since the last e-mail but the club has been busy with lots of people taking to the water over the summer. We have run quite a few courses now and it is fantastic to see people from them returning to sail regularly.

Double Hander Races

On Sunday 28th August the racing will be in two-handed boats such as Wayfarers, Enterprise, Laser 2000, Wanderer's etc. The aim is to get people sailing together competitively and we will try to pair up novices with more experienced racers to help teach some racing skills and techniques. We can allocate boats on the day so just turn up and join in. There will be four races (three to count) starting at 11:00. This will replace the August mini series racing that the calendar shows.

Team Racing

The bank holiday Monday (29th) will see the traditional team racing event. This is a type of racing where two teams at a time battle on the water using the sailing rules of the road to obstruct the opposing team. This is an excellent opportunity to really learn the racing rules from both spectating and on the water. The team members will be selected on the day, so again, just turn up and have a go. The first race is planned for 11:30.

George Washington Cup

The last of the Thursday evening sailing on 1st September sees the competition for the George Washington Cup. This is open to entries from anyone who has not previously won an event (cup or series) so is a great opportunity for our recently qualified sailors to try to win a trophy. Try to be on the water for 6 o'clock so we can fit the two races in before the wind stops and it gets too dark.

Roswell Monster Trophy

Another trophy race takes place on Sunday 4th September. This time there are two weighty metal monster sculptures as trophies for the first adult and first cadet. There will be four handicap races (with three to count) starting at 11:00.

Bart's Bash

Every year there is a world-wide charity sailing race (the world’s largest mass-participation sailing event) to raise money for the Andrew Simpson Foundation which aims to get disadvantaged young people into sailing. The race starts at 12:00 and lasts 1 hour (slightly longer than our usual races). There will be a £5 entry fee per boat. Lets see if we can get a good number of boats on the water at Ely. No previous racing experience required.

The race will also be used as part of the Autumn series and there will be another couple of races taking place that afternoon.

Fleet Racing

On Sunday 18th September we aim to have racing in class fleets. The laser and topper classes are our biggest fleets so we should be able to get a good few boats out for each of those. There should be enough comets well and solos to make up fleets so please contact your fleet captains and get them to encourage the rest of the owners. If you don't own a boat or there aren't enough of your class then why not hire a club topper or laser for the day. There will be a separate start for each class and the finishing order is the result (no handicaps necessary). Racing will start at 11:00 with four races (3 to count).

Other Events

There have been a couple of events forwarded to me that people might be interested in taking part in.

Hunts laser open

I was hoping that you could circulate notice amongst your respective members that Hunts SC (near St Ives in Cambridgeshire) is hosting an ILCA (formerly Laser) open meeting on the 10th September.

We will be running a series of 3(+) races starting from 11am, with sign-up from 10am. The entry fee will be £10 - payable at registration.

If there are any questions, please get in touch, but I hope it will be an entertaining day of close racing!

Best wishes, Mike https://huntssc.org.uk/

National 12 crews

The National 12 class are having our National Championships (Burton Week) at Felixstowe Ferry SC from 27-30th August and currently we have a few helms who are looking for crews. Please can you send out a message to your members and see if anyone would be interested in crewing for some or all of the event? If they have any questions, more than happy to help - chair@national12.org.

That is about all for now.

Happy sailing.

Phil Hardy
