April Newsletter

Last Sunday the racing season got underway with the first round of the Spring Series being keenly fought between three of the club's more seasoned sailors. Gary Ungless eventually came on top in two of the three races despite some rather wintery weather. There's a reason why these chaps are good, but if anyone is up to the challenge of knocking them off their lofty pedestals, then please come along at 1.00pm on a Sunday to go head to head!

The past few weekends have seen a few people helping the club undertake essential maintenance work around the clubhouse and lake. Our gratitude goes out to Rosalind and Isabel Grooms for some sterling painting of both the race box and fences. Your efforts have been noticed by many and are much appreciated by all. Richard Smith, the club Bosun, has been magnificent. His wife, Ingrid, has allowed him to attend every single weekend since January ensuring what can be done is done. And Gary Ungless (Unofficial Club Engineer) is currently ensuring the powerboat shed is capable of housing our new power boat! Thank you ever so much to everyone who has given up their free time to help.

The existing RIB has been poorly for some time and it was felt that the time was right to purchase a replacement. Much deliberation ensued which made Brexit negotiations look like a tea party. However, in order to provide sufficient rescue capacity, but to also maintain our powerboat training course offering, it was decided a like for like replacement was the right way to go. Watch this space (and the space in the boat shed) for more information.

UPCOMING DATES / EVENTS EASTER HOLIDAY SAILING FOR CADETS - Tues 16th & Wed 17th April - From 9.00am.... This coming Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th April (during the school holiday) Gary Ungless, a club Dinghy Instructor, is facilitating 2 days of sailing at the club specifically aimed at giving all youngsters sailing experience and to put into practice what they have learnt on their courses so far. The days will run from 9am to 4pm with the emphasis on fun and gaining time on the water. It is not an RYA course, so there is no fixed programme.

For additional information, please email training.elysc@gmail.com

RECREATIONAL/SOCIAL SAILING SEASON BEGINS - Saturday 20th April - From 1.00pm - Please note the earlier start time....

The new recreational social sailing season for 2019 will begin on this day. A full sailing calendar is now available to be printed from the club website, or a printed brochure is obtainable at the clubhouse. It would be great to see you out on the water this year enjoying your hobby.

EASTER EGG TROPHY RACE - Sunday 21st April - From 11.30am - 4 races, 3 to count....

This is the first one-day racing event of the season and is for both adults and cadets/children with separate prizes for each. So, if you are free, fancy your chances and want to blow off a few cobwebs, it would be great to see you on the water. You have to be in it to win it....it could be you!

OPEN DAY - Bank Holiday Monday 6th May - From 1.00pm....

The club is hosting its annual Open Day on this day where members of the public are given free taster sessions in a club boat by one of our many and experienced sailors. Please do come along and bring friends, brothers, sisters, work colleagues or whoever you like along with you. It's a great way to introduce others to the joys of sailing and an opportunity to involve your partners in your hobby. You could become a husband and wife team before you know it (other partnership combinations are available!). Although the club is open to the general public on this day, social sailing is still going on, so please don't be shy, but club boat availability may be limited. Food and beer will be available on the day too.

And lastly for now, congratulations and well done to all the recent children's course attendees for successfully completing their Stage 2 and Stage 4 certification. We hope you learned much and had fun on the water. We hope to see you sailing soon.

That's all for now, but please watch this space or the website for more info......
