February Newsletter

It's OFFICIAL, the countdown to the new season has begun, Gary Ungless got itchy feet last Thursday, awakened his Solo from its slumbers and took to the water with nine other members in their dinghies to enjoy some sailing in the February heatwave! Thank you to all who joined him, so that he didn't have to play on his own!

And in advance of this, Liz Ungless, our glam Membership Secretary (and Gary's long-suffering wife and social secretary) was busy sending out renewal reminders to all those keen to hit the new season running. If you haven't already done so, please remember to renew, it would be lovely to see "hundreds" of boats out on the water this season filled with members and their families enjoying the sport of sailing, a picnic on the bank and a drink from the bar afterwards.

Also, a heartfelt thank you to all those members who have given up their free time to help on the winter working parties to date. Obviously, this task would not be possible without the ability and enormous selection of tools belonging to Club Bosun, Richard Smith. Thank you to Ingrid, his wife, for allowing him out each Saturday despite the jobs that need to be done at home! But most especially, to our newest members, Rosalind and Isabel Grooms. They have made a tremendous impact, not just on us, but on the Race Box which has been repainted by them. Thank you, so, so much!

Without further ado, please make a note the following dates in your diaries!

Steve Board, our Training Principal and his band of merry instructors have been busy putting together a sailing course programme for the upcoming season. The dates are now finalised and can be viewed on the club website HERE. These dates will be advertised more broadly to the general public shortly, but we wanted to give our existing members the option to book first, should you wish to either refresh your memory or upgrade your skills to the next level for the new season. These courses do fill up fast, so please do book early if you can.

We are fortunate that the Topper Association will again be holding a Topper Coaching Day this year at Ely, the day before our Topper Open Event. The coaching day is open to all members, particularly those who regularly sail a Topper, to receive some top class coaching from a respected squad coach. Cost for members of Ely is discounted to £20 only, but you must pay and register your intention to attend by clicking on the link below and entering your details. https://gbrtopper.ourclubadmin.com/event.php?event=580

SATURDAY 20th APRIL - SOCIAL SAILING BEGINS - From 1.00pm - Please note the earlier start time this year...

The new social sailing season for 2019 will begin on this day. A full sailing calendar is currently being produced and will be available to all shortly. As always, members are required as a condition of membership to participate in the duty roster because your sailing really isn't possible without all you lovely members kindly chipping in to contribute and help out. Please refer to the club website if this has come as a bit of a shock.

Those candidates lucky enough to be allocated a duty will be notified via email several times prior to their "Big Day". Performing a duty is not onerous and you will be one part of a crack team of experienced old hands who will guide you throughout the day, so there is nothing to fear - I promise. It's how I started and it hasn't done me any harm????

You will be issued with login details to "Dutyman", the electronic duty management system, so that you can confirm your duty dates, or request a swap should the date not be suitable for you. It's that easy!

Sailing Adult with an added flexible Crew option permits the membership holder (helm) to sail with different people (family members/friends) an unlimited number of times as their crew, with your crewmate not requiring their own membership because they are covered by your own subscription. They are not permitted to helm the vessel or hire any club boat for their own purpose. It is hoped this will give members even more opportunities to get on the water this year.

That's all for now, but please watch this space or the website for more...
