January Newsletter

Happy New Year to all,

I hope you had a good break over Christmas and enjoyed the festivities despite the impending arrival of the credit card bill through the letterbox. I trust the New Year resolutions are holding up well? If not, there's always next year???

We had an immensely busy season last year, and we are hoping to go bigger and better this season!

So, what's been happening since you were last at the club?

WINTER WORKING PARTIES - Every Saturday from 26th January 10.30am until you get a better offer or die from exhaustion!

The wonderful club volunteers who give their time freely during the winter working parties have been busy making the club looking fantastic. The clubhouse interior has been redecorated and you should take a peek at the Ladies Toilet - my goodness! Our very own interior design team of Simon "Llewelyn Bowen" Leeks and Gary "Nick Knowles" Ungless have worked miracles renewing the lavatory fixtures and fittings and once the new windows are installed, it will make our facilities the "number one (and two)" destination of Roswell Pits! A massive thank you.

With the purchase of large round tables, new chairs and accessories the whole interior looks much brighter and more appealing. For those who may not already know, the clubhouse is available for members to hire at a very reasonable charge.

Additionally, our *young* enthusiastic club Bosun, Richard Smith, would welcome some help undertaking the usual winter maintenance jobs around the club grounds. So, if you could spare a couple of hours on a Saturday, then please just rock up to assist him and the club in general, it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount of time you are able to donate will make a great deal of difference.

NEW MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY INTRODUCED - SAILING ADULT MEMBERSHIP WITH ADDED *CREW* OPTION Sailing Adult with an added flexible Crew option permits the membership holder (helm) to sail with different people (family members/friends) an unlimited number of times as their crew, with your crewmate not requiring their own membership because they are covered by your own subscription. They are not permitted to helm the vessel or hire any club boat for their own purpose. It is hoped this will give members even more opportunities to get on the water this year by enjoying sailing with a companion.

FRIDAY EVENING SOCIAL SAILING from 6.30pm After reviewing last season, it has been decided to extend Friday evening social sailing from 17th May to 13th September starting at 6:30pm till dusk to increase time on the water for our social sailors. We would like Friday evening to become known as "Family Takeaway Night". Please come straight from work, meet family members at the club, bring food with you, or arrange a takeaway on arrival and then enjoy an evening of relaxed sailing with your loved ones to unwind after a week at work. Lovely. The bar as ever will be open for those who would like to come and just have a drink and enjoy the surroundings.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SOCIAL SAILING from 1.00pm Saturday was our busiest day last year and would like to give more chances for these sailors to progress and develop their sailing skills. So, for those interested in doing so, a simple course can be set to help introduce sailors to racing courses, with advice and coaching from an experienced sailor on hand if anyone requires it, as you master your way around the course.

NEW ESC NEWSLETTER We are also going to be enhancing the way we do our business, increasing access to club information and improving the flow of that information to our members. It is a belief of mine that every member should have their say in the club, and should know what is happening in the club, the first step in this approach will be regular monthly updates, such as this new look Commodore's Newsletter. There will also be a new notice board inside the clubhouse dedicated to letting members know the events that are planned, when they are and how you can take part. This information is also just one click away on our website so there is no need for anyone to miss out. I think that is all for now, but please watch this space or the website for more...... However, if you have any questions, please get in touch with me by e-mailing commodore.elysc@gmail.com or speaking to me next time you are at the club.
