Junior Trophy 2017
On Sunday, six young competitors undertook 30mph gusts in the annual Junior Trophy Race, which ran alongside the August Mini Series.
In the first race, Ted came first in a Laser Radial after sailing a clean race. Kirk Stamford, who was sailing a Comet for the first time, had a poor start, but took good advantage of the powerful gusts and finished second. Rhys finished third despite sailing an unstable high performance dinghy in difficult conditions.
The second race brought stronger winds causing most of the sailors to capsize. Kirk finished first after sailing a quick race, and avoiding a capsize. Ted capsized once, but still held on for second. Ben Biggs who is relatively new to racing came third after sailing in an impressive fashion.
In the last race, the wind steadied but remained strong. Ted crossed the line first, but Kirk who had sailed very quickly once again claimed victory on corrected time. Ted came second. Ben’s brother Tom finished third.
Overall, Kirk finished first counting two points, with Ted second on four points, and Tom Biggs third on 7 points.
The first three races of the August Mini Series got under way with John Wells claiming two firsts in his Laser, and Chandler Stamford claiming a victory, also sailing a Laser.
