Ely Youth League 2016
Ely Sailing Club hosted the third event in the annual Cambs Youth League racing series. Greeted by gusty conditions, five Ely cadets took to the waters. Competing for Ely were Chandler Stamford in a Laser, with Kirk Stamford, Ted Pepper, Robbie Allan, and Grace Robinson all in Toppers.
The first race saw Ted Pepper have a flying race finishing 2nd, with Kirk close behind but losing out on handicap to finish 5th. Chandler Stamford was first Laser Radial and was 7th overall from 27 competitors. Robbie Allan had a challenging race but finished a respectable 21st. Grace Robinson who had only ever sailed on three occasions prior to the event came 26th after battling difficult conditions for her first ever race.
The second race saw a troubled start for the Toppers with Pepper capsizing on the start line and taking Kirk Stamford over with him. However, the duo managed to untangle and get back under way catching the rest of the fleet. Chandler Stamford also had a fantastic start keeping up with the full rigs and finishing 6th overall. Kirk came 9th followed by Ted in 12th. Robbie finished 24th and Grace improved on her previous race to finish 25th.
The final race got under way in the searing heat with a dying breeze. Chandler lost out on the start line but overtook most of the fleet to round the windward mark as 3rd Laser after carefully navigating the channel. Kirk and Ted had a calamity free start and sailed themselves into a lead before the first mark with Robbie and Grace following close behind. After some close tussles and tactical advantages with wind shifts, Kirk sailed well clear but lost out on average lap time after sailing one more lap than Ted in a dying wind. Chandler also suffered from the average lap time system having to sail an additional lap over the other Laser Radials. As a result, Ted finished 7th, with Kirk 8th and Chandler 9th. Robbie came 22nd and Grace replicated her second race with a 25th position.
Overall, everybody had an enjoyable afternoon’s racing and thank you to all the competitors who came along to race.
A special mention goes to Grace Robinson who despite only sailing three times before, she won the Endeavour Award for her determination and not giving up after several capsizes throughout the day and finding herself in several challenging situations.
