Hunts Youth League 2015

The weather for the fourth instalment of the Cambs Youth League was sailed at Hunts SC in some variable conditions with calm patches and shifty gusts. In the first race, the Lasers set off first with Ely sailors Jack Knight and Chandler Stamford bustling amongst the large fleet with both rounding the first mark in second and third. They continued to sail well with Jack Knight and a sailor from Cam benefitting from a gusty reach to get away from the fleet. They continued to battle until unfortunately Jack lost out coming second. Chandler was close behind but was covered on the downwind leg allowing several boats to pass him leaving him 7th. Kirk Stamford in his Topper was joined by Ted Pepper and Izzy Duckworth from Ely and they all sailed an impressive race. Kirk finished 17th of 39, with Ted 24th and Izzy 18th. However, Ted and Izzy, despite having different coloured boats, shared the same sail number resulting in some confusion with the results processing. Disappointingly, this meant their results weren’t a true reflection of how they sailed.

The second race saw all the Ely sailors up their game. Jack battled hard in the Laser fleet to maintain his first position throughout the race, while Chandler climbed to fourth. Kirk improved to finish 14th after a tussle with Ted, who eventually overtook in the final moments to claim 13th. However, his result was confused with Izzy who came a commendable 24th in the blustery conditions. As a result, Ted “finished” 24th while Izzy was 13th.

In the final race, the Laser fleet was becoming extremely competitive in the final chance to come first. Chandler had a great start and lead the fleet around the first mark, but was overtaken by two sailors to drop to third. However, he fended off Jack Knight who was close behind and trying to pass. Eventually, Chandler maintained his position coming third with Jack fifth. Kirk improved again coming 12th after a busy race amongst the large fleet. Similarly, Ted actually received his correct result of 16th while Izzy also had her correct result of 36th after a tiring and difficult race.

This led to Jack Knight coming second overall with 3 points, Chandler fourth with 7 points, Kirk 15th on 26 points, Izzy 16th on 31 points, and Ted 23rd on 40 points.
