Cam - Cambs Youth League 2015
The first round of the Cambs Youth League took place on Saturday 25th April at Cam Sailing Club. The wind conditions all day were fluky, gusty, shifty, and all in all, challenging! Two new sailors, Matthew and Laura Campbell, joined the Ely Team and took part in Toppers. Kirk Stamford competed in his Topper, and Jack Knight was crewed by Mollie Lee in his National 12.
The first race saw Laura and Matthew compete in their first ever race, let alone a Youth League Event! Jack and Mollie sailed a competitive race with the Laser fleet, however, on handicap, they were beaten by three, placing them fourth. Kirk Stamford tussled with Little Paxton sailor William Russell but in the end, Kirk was victorious over his competition coming 6th. Laura finished in 27th place after soldiering on through the nasty conditions despite hitting her head. Similarly, Matthew persevered after finding himself stuck by the bank.
The next race saw Kirk miss out due to a technical issue with his boat. Laura and Matthew, now with reefed sails, sailed with much more control and improved fantastically with Laura coming 21st and Matthew 10th! Jack and Mollie came sixth after a tense battle with the Lasers which was eventually decided on handicap.
The final race saw Jack and Mollie climb back up the leader board with a 5th beating William Russell by a large margin on handicap. Kirk’s Topper was back after being repaired with a trusty D-Shackle and he sailed a fast race frequently switching positions with William Russell before leaving him behind when William had to take two penalty turns. Kirk went on to finish in 6th. Laura was consistent with her last race and finished in 21st following a fast and impressive race. Similarly, her brother Matthew finished in 10th place just like his last race.
To conclude, Jack Knight finished in 5th overall counting a 4th and 5th and Kirk came first Under 15 and finished 6th overall. Matthew came 11th overall with two 10ths and Laura finished 23rd. Well done to all who took part. A special well done goes to Matthew who was awarded the Endeavour Trophy for his inspiring determination to continue despite things going wrong.
