Paxton Lakes Youth League 2014
The final round of the Cambs Youth League took place on Saturday 10th October 2014 at Paxton Lake Sailing Club. It brought a faint breeze and bursts of sunshine on a day packed with rivalry and competiveness. Twenty five boats took part in the competition.
Entering the final round saw Harry Moffatt of Hunts in first position with an 8 points lead over Chandler Stamford and a 10 point lead over Jack Knight, both of Ely Sailing Club.
In the first race, the wind was light and shifty with Jack Knight and his crew Mollie Lee prospering in their National 12. After a battle with Jack Clarke in a Laser Radial, similar to that at Hunts, Chandler in a Laser Full Rig broke free and sailed clear of the fast fleet led only by Jack Knight. Jack continued to improve his lead throughout the race. Kirk Stamford enjoyed a fast and impressive race to finish 4th overall on handicap. Jack Knight gained 1st place, Harry Moffatt was 2nd and Chandler Stamford was 3rd.
In the second race, the conditions were similar to the first. Chandler had a bad start but thanks to a wind shift, he rounded the first mark in second place with Jack and Mollie slightly ahead. Jack and Chandler gained a large lead over the fleets and lapped everybody over the course of the race. After a tussle, and Chandler finding himself in a situation involving shallows and a daggerboard… Jack beat Chandler on Handicap, with Jack and Mollie 1st and Chandler 2nd. Kirk enjoyed yet another fantastic race, but followed suit with his brother and got stuck near to the central island. Unfortunately, this pushed Kirk down the fleet and he finished 14th.
The final race brought a stronger and flukier wind with some awkward shifts. Chandler has a brilliant start and sailed clear down the first mark. Jack and Mollie found themselves in the midst of the fleet but managed to break clear and rounded the first mark in 2nd place. Chandler and Jack flew round the course completing 8 laps and lapping some boats twice! Throughout the race, Chandler gained a greater lead and pulled away from Jack. This left Chandler 1st and Jack and Mollie 2nd on handicap. Kirk like Jack and Mollie was swamped by the large Topper fleet, but he carved his way through them on the upwind leg. He sailed a consistent and steady race and managed to beat William Russell of Paxton just across the finish line. He finished 8th on handicap.
After compiling the results, Jack and Mollie were first counting two firsts, Chandler was second with a 1st and 2nd, and Kirk was 7th with a 4th and 8th.
Then, the overall Cambs Youth League Series 2014 results were announced. After Harry Moffatt had lead the way in the series to date, Jack and Chandler managed to beat him in the final event. Chandler Stamford finished 1st overall and claimed the individual trophy for Ely SC following on from Jack last year. Jack and Mollie took 2nd, moving Harry Moffatt into third. Kirk Stamford was a respectable 7th overall out of 68 boats and third under 15.
Well done to all competitors and particularly to Team Ely who proudly took the top positions.
