Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Commodores Waffle’. I hope you're all well and enjoying this beautiful summer weather.
When can I sail?
It is great to see so many new members coming to the club to enjoy a sail. Social sailing is on Saturday afternoons and Thursday evenings which is also combined with some social racing, which I would encourage everyone to join in. There are still a few Friday evening social sessions to go this season.
For Open events held at the club there is no social sailing, only those racing the specific classes of boat will be allowed on the water. If you are interested to know more about Open events either chat to the relevant class captain or any committee member. Why not come and watch or help out?
Sunday afternoons are reserved for club racing which takes priority. However, some social sailors maybe allowed on the water. This is at the discretion of the Officer of the Day and will be dependant on the number of boats racing, the course set and the general conditions. Also those wishing to race will have priority over club boat use. If you are on the water on a Sunday and not racing please pay attention to keep out of the way of the racers and follow any instructions given either by the Officer of the Day or the rescue crew.
I would strongly recommend everyone to think about racing. It is a good way to improve your sailing, meet other club members and extend your sailing season. A great way to start is to join in on a Thursday evening as well as ask for help and advice from the members on duty at any club session. Another option is to see if anyone is looking for crew. Look out for further training at the club that can be offered if there is enough interest. If you want further help or advice grab one of your committee members.
You may remember during my last waffle I mentioned abandoned trailers at the bottom of the dinghy park. Unfortunately, we still have several trailers left, this is a polite reminder if they belong to you please remove them as soon as possible.
I am pleased to announce that the new Ely Sailing Club polo shirts are available in various sizes and colours. If you would like to purchase one please let me know, they are £14 for adults and £12 for children’s sizes.
Date for your diary:
Saturday 12th July – Cambs Youth League @ Ely Sailing Club
The Cambridgeshire Youth Sailing League is a competition for dinghy sailors who are under 19 years of age on 1st September and who are members of the participating clubs. It is both an individual competition and a team competition and takes place throughout the year at five venues, which are Ely, Cam, Hunts, Paxton and Grafham.
The briefing is at 10:30 with the first of 3 races at 11:00 so you will need to be at the club for 9:30 in order to be ready. The entry fee is £1 per boat and the boat hire is free for this special event.
I encourage all of our cadets to come and join in this fun event. If you wish to hire a club boat, please e-mail me at email@example.com because any spare boats will be offers to the OnBoard cadets from Grafham.
