Topper Open 2014
Written by a visiting sailor's father, Scott Harris.
There was a total of three races, and the races officer set some very good courses with long beats, which provided lots of challenges to the young sailors and places were lost and gained during the this period of the race.
In the first race, in the second lap, three sailors Euan Harris, Jack Cammann and Jamie Cammann managed to break away from the main fleet and had some very close racing with Jamie finally managing to pull away from the other two to claim victory.
In the second race the fleet was closely packed going round the gybe mark after the first lap, but in the second beat, Jack Cammann managed to find lifting winds on the beat up the channel and built a substantial lead over the fleet. Ellie Edwards and Jamie Cammann had an interesting battle around the course with Ellie finally claiming second place.
In the third race, the wind had picked up a bit which some testing conditions for the sailors, but they all coped very well with the conditions. In the final race Jamie managed to pull away from the fleet, further behind Jack had an interesting battle with Ellie Edwards before he finally came out on top. The youngest competitor, Kirk Stamford showed great spirit and determination in completing every race.
Ely is a great sailing club, as you are able to sit outside the club house, high up on the bank, and observe the whole sailing area from a great vantage point. The food from the galley is also very good and great value for money, I will definitely visit again next year.
