Easter Egg Races 2014
All the competitors at Ely Sailing Club were rewarded with a Kinder Egg for competing in the Easter Egg Trophy on Sunday. There were eight single handed boats and a National 12 helmed by Jack Knight and Mollie Lee taking part in the four handicap races, in a force three north easterly wind.
Ian Bradley from the Ouse Amateur Sailing Club in Kings Lynn was invited by his friend Graham Nelson to take part in the races. Ian was sailing a Streaker and did not take long to head the fleet. Even though Jack Knight had line honours in the first race Ian won on corrected time, followed by the Solos of Simon Leeks, Gary Ungless and Alan White, reducing Jack to fifth.
Jack and Mollie again lead the second race but were beaten on corrected time by Simon Leeks and Gary Ungless. In the third race, Chandler Stamford sailing a Topper lost out by five seconds to Ian Bradley with the solos taking the next three places. The fourth race had to be sailed to determine the winner. After instances on the first beat when Gary Ungless and Simon Leeks collided resulting in Simon retiring, the two remaining Solos and Ian in the Streaker had a very competitive race in the increasing breeze. Chandler even though he finished fourth he was only 42 seconds behind the solos, with Ian being 34 seconds ahead of Alan White.
Even though Ian finished first with three points the Easter Egg Trophy was awarded to club member Simon Leeks with five points.
3. Gary Ungless 8 points.
4. Alan White 10 points.
5th Chandler Stamford 11 points
6. Jack Knight and Mollie Lee 15 points.
7. Graham Nelson (Lightning) 20 points
7. Kirk Stamford and Melanie Patrick in Toppers tied for 8th place with 21 points.
