Happy New Year to all,
I hope you have had a good lay up and enjoyed your Christmas break. We had an immensely busy season last year, and we are hoping to go bigger and better this season! We have had confirmation of St Mary’s school booking sailing courses for all their year six (a total of ninety) students as well as City College’s annual sailing day, along with people already booking courses. The winter working parties have been busy keeping the club looking fantastic – a big thank you to all that are taking part.
The committee, after reviewing last season, decided to include a trial run of Friday evening social sailing from 16th May to 18th July with a start time of 6:00pm till dusk to increase time on the water for our social sailors. Saturday was our busiest day last year and would like to give more chance for these sailors to enjoy the club, the bar as ever will be open for those who would like to come and just have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere.
We’re also going back to basics and Thursday night racing will return to its roots and become beginners racing again. Simple courses will be set to help introduce sailors to racing courses, with advice and coaching on hand if anyone requires it – this is an ideal opportunity to give racing a go without the fear of getting in the way or not knowing the rules, so if you fancy having a go or even coming down just to have a look, sailing will start at 6:00pm till dusk from Thursday 17th April until September 4th.
We are also going to be changing the way we do our business, increasing access to club information, easing administration, and improving the flow of information to our members. It is a belief of mine that every member should have their say in the club, and should know what is happening in the club, the first step in this approach was the introduction of Commodores Waffle, for the 2014 season we’re going to be introducing a new website – so please keep an eye out – It will have a 24hour feed from the camera which will be mounted in the race office with a view down the lake.
Some of you may have had an e-mail already asking to check you can do your duties, we will be using Dutyman from now on to administer our duty rota, if you cannot do a day simply swap with a friend, it’s a simple system which is really easy to master. Please ensure you help out, we rely on our members good nature to help by doing their OOD, assistant and rescue duties, so please, please ensure your duty is covered.
Following the suggestion at the AGM we will be adopting the Sailwave system to do our racing results meaning we will be able to upload the results directly to the web so everyone will have access to the results 24 hours a day to see how you are getting on in the series. If you are worried about not being able to work the Sailwave system on your OOD duty don’t worry someone will be around to help.
We also be adopting a system that will allow you to book courses, enter events – such as an open meeting or book a ticket for a social event, and eventually re-new your membership online.
The committee is confident that these changes will aid us in managing the club more effectively, and make the administration much simpler – allowing us more time to go sailing!
As you can see there is still plenty happening behind the scenes, but on the business end of the club the hardened sailors of the model yacht fleet have been braving the cold winds to sail most Saturdays, they continue to grow and now race on a regular basis. With two new trophies to sail for this season it looks as if this fleet will go from strength to strength.
A special thank you to Page fine jewellery in Ely town centre for sponsoring our Summer series, I’m sure you will all join me in thanking them as they have donated a new Trophy for you all to compete for! If you’re in town please call in and have a look around they have some excellent pieces of jewellery, and please pass on the information and recommend them to friends and family.
If you have any problems, please do get in touch with me by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org or speaking to a committee member.
See you all soon,
